Elektrik Milk Bath Press is planning an anthology organized around Dia de los Muertos (and if you don't know what that is, perhaps you should skip ahead to the next item). "We are looking for well-crafted, original stories from 2000 to 5000 words which involve Dia de la Muertos in some way. Other than that, subject matter is fairly open....We like stories which are more literary in nature, but we welcome elements of fantasy and/or subtle horror, magical realism, etc." No simultaneous submissions. Changes are afoot regarding the submission policies at Dzanc Books. If you're submitting a novel or literary nonfiction, you can do so directly, but if you're submitting a short story collection, you'll need to go via Dzanc's new Short Story Collection Contest route (and unfortunately, it seems that this will be a fee-charging contest, though "Dzanc will still be looking for and considering specifically solicited short story collections"). Overall, I'd say this is good news for the novelists and nonfiction writers out there who've admired Dzanc, but not quite so good for the short story writers. Read the updated submissions page here.

Second Story Press, which describes itself as "a small Canadian feminist press publishing books of special interest to women," is now accepting unsolicited manuscripts. Its list mixes fiction, non-fiction, and children's books. "We look for manuscripts dealing with the many diverse and varied aspects of the lives of girls and women." Focuses on Canadian authors. Thanks to BJ Epstein for sharing information about The Review of English Studies Essay Prize. According to its Web site, this competition's goal is "to encourage scholarship amongst postgraduate research students in Britain and abroad. The essay can be on any topic of English literature of the English language from medieval times to the twentieth century." Prize includes publication of the winning essay in The Review of English Studies; a cash prize of £250; £250 worth of Oxford University Press books; and a free year's subscription to The Review of English Studies.
